painting Sterlite boxes question for Chris....

BobS Oct 26, 2005 12:51 PM

Chris,

I want to paint some of my Sterlite boxes that I use as hides black. picked up some of that Milk Paint one of the posters suggested to do it but I think I'm probably going to need something glossy to keep it washable since it will be in the cage and I would like things to look nice.

Also I found some gray plastic containers that are suppossed to be fiberglass reinforced. Is the fiberglass any concern for me drilling the access holes for the snakes?

Thanks,

Bob.

Not sure this will work, but my ideas would it.

Scuff or sand the plastic, so you can not see thru it. SAFE

I think Krylon makes a plastic paint Fusion? Not sure on safety. I'd let cure for a long time.

Use a different tub. $2 cat pans at dollar store, or other various colored tubs.

good luck

Painting plastic can be easy or it can be difficult. If these Sterilites are food storage containers they might be tough to paint.

One thing that is supposed to work on HDPE and other food-contact approved plastics is to "sweat" them with a torch. I'm not sure exactly how much or whatever. I think you have to come pretty close to burning it.

They use Krylon Plastic Spray Paint.

Regarding the fiberglass reinforced plastic, I have used these for herps quite a bit. Used to know a guy who sold large ones pretty darn cheap.

I don't recall ever drilling one but I'm guessing I did. Biggest concern would be fiberglass dust so make sure you clean things up and seal the cut edges somehow.
