Crested egg trouble

TheGreenMan Oct 26, 2005 01:03 PM

I have two crested geckos that are starting to breed. I am having trouble with the eggs. They have a rough texture to them(seem to be like that when I find them. Is this normal?). After a couple weeks they start to shrink up and dry out. (a couple have gotten fuzz on them) I keep the eggs in a container with holes and a breathable lid with damp vermiculite in the bottom. The eggs rest on a piece of plastic to keep them from direct contact with the vermiculite. Eggs from the same clutch go together, so 2 eggs per container. The temperature is within the range they are suposed to be in. I think. The only thing I think can be wrong is that the temp is not right.
Help please.

the eggs are most definitely infertile. i have only ever once seen one of my fertile eggs get any mold on it, and it was because of some extra egg yolk that was in the vermiculite
the eggs should be very smooth, and bright white, a textured, slightly yellow egg is infertile.

Hey, I noticed this in the original post, and didn't see you address it in your reply, so now I have a question-lol! Is there a reason for placing the eggs on plastic rather than placing them directly in the vermiculite? I've never bred Cresteds, but I've always used vermiculite with my other eggs...pythons, chameleons, beardeds, etc. Also in Hampers Crested book she shows Crested eggs in the vermiculite. So, why would he even use vermiculite if he's not placing the eggs in it? Just curious, and if there's something I should know, I'd definitely appreciate the info as I do plan to breed Crested in the near future. Thanks, take care!

i keep mine directly on the vermiculite.

I kept mine on the vermiculite as well. But when I saw the eggs getting mold I thought that it might be too wet for them. Guess I was wrong, they are just infertile. Thanks all.
