Feeding Q

johnavilla Oct 26, 2005 02:19 PM

OK the diet health forum is inactive so I'll repost here.

Here is the sit. I have a female that eats mice (just got her eating). I have a male that eats rats. I just moved my male in from my moms house to mine. The pet store near me has been flaky on rats but has a steady supply of mice. I can't breed rats because my girl friend won't allow them in the house any longer than it takes my snake to kill them and won't let me keep them in the freezer so no FT either. Last night (4:30ish) when I fed the girl, my boy did something that he never does; he stuck his head out of his hide and started looking around and tounging the air. He only comes out late at night when he thinks no one is around and when I throw in a rat so it seems obvious that he had the scent of the mice. My question is, if I feed him mice when the pet store is out of rats which is almost always, will I have a hard time getting him to take rats later?

Depends on the snake - some go easily back and forth - some will get stuck on one or another - if you keep switching back and forth probably less likely that he'll get stuck only on mice or only on rats.

So, it's trial and error then. Hey I agree with your derma post as far as it being a deformity...but I still want one, I bet it is soft! Thanks for the feeding input. I'm almost scared to try though. It's so easy to throw in one or two good sized rats. He usually takes two smalls a week. Sees em, Kills em, Eats em. Real stromg feeder, I'd hate to get stuck feeding him the equivelent in mice. I already have a female that insists on four mice a week.
