Stubborn Kingsnake.......not feeding.

dubalker Oct 26, 2005 06:26 PM

I recently found a wild arizona mountain kingsnake about three months ago while traveling through arizona this past august. I brougt it home (to san diego) and kept it in a terarium. I fed it an adult large mouse for its first meal and it wasted no time in eating it. For its next couple meals it had no problem eating the adult mice. About a month and half ago the snake started striking at the mouse but not grabbing it. He would do this three or four times and eventually leave the mouse alone and never try to eat again. I had to buy around 3 or 4 mice before the snake finally ate. I wasnt sure why it had waited that long, but was glad it ate nevertheless so didnt pay too much attention. Well now its been almost four weeks and the snake hasnt eaten. Again ive put about three differnt mice in there and again it strikes at the mouse soon after putting it in the cage but never eats it until I eventually have to take the mouse out before it dies. The snake is about 3 and half feet, I dont know how old it is nor do I know the gender. I was wondering what i should do and what if anything is wrong with my snake. thanks very much.

Your wild caught pyro is actually acting very normal. Most sonora mtn kings start going off feed in Sept., especially wild caught ones. If you have the means to start cooling him for the winter I would do that. See if you can find a place to keep him between 48-60 degrees for the next 4 months. I would cover him too to imitate the photo period they desire too. I would start warming him up sometime between mid Feb. and the 1st of March
