Late start

ciddian Oct 26, 2005 06:43 PM

Hello

My Hl's seem to be slowing down now and not super interested in any food that i offer.
I was having a few concerns about hibernation with my two girls so i am just going to throw some questions out.

I was going to follow the hibernation schedual that was posted on the www.phrynosoma.com site under platyrhinos. But i am a bit late.. Is it alright if i start now anyways?

Also.. I do have some succulents planted in the tank along with an aloe. Would it be recomended to replant them elsewere? Or would i be able to leave the uv on these guys while they hibernate?

Is there a temperature that the tank cannot go below? and would it be correct to take the temps of the sand a few inches in... or the temps that are on top of the sand. I was just worried because my room can get a bit cold untill my land lord turns up the heat.

And lastly.. I was thinking of doing a huge sand change before i do this, so everything is nice and clean. Good or bad idea?

Thanks for any tips you guys can offer

Hello

YES IT'S FINE TO START NOW.....

Also.. I do have some succulents planted in the tank along with an aloe. Would it be recomended to replant them elsewere? Or would i be able to leave the uv on these guys while they hibernate?

i AM NO PLANT EXPERT AND HAVEN'T A REAL CLUE, BUT IF THEY ARE ACTUALLY GROWING i WOULD KEEP THEM IN, IF YOUR CONCERNED, THEN PULL THEM OUT AND PUT THEM IN A POT A GROW THEM THROUGH THE WINTER...

Is there a temperature that the tank cannot go below?

thEY WAY TO LOOK AT THIS, IS THERE IS A TIME IN THE WINTER WHEN IT CAN GET DOWN TO FREEZING OR EVEN A LIGHT BLANKET OF SNOW IN THE DESERT. buT IF THE BASKING SITE IS USUALLY SET UP AT 105 DEGREES, SOMETHONG ON THE 50 TO 60 DEGREE RANGE SHOULD BE ADEQUATE TO CAUSE INACTIVITY AND HIBERNATION..........

and would it be correct to take the temps of the sand a few inches in... or the temps that are on top of the sand. I was just worried because my room can get a bit cold untill my land lord turns up the heat.

i AM GUESSING THAT YOUR ROOM SHOULD BE PLENTY WARM ENOUGH THAT THE HORNED LIZARDS SHOULD NOT EXPIRE DUE TO LACK OF HEAT.

And lastly.. I was thinking of doing a huge sand change before i do this, so everything is nice and clean. Good or bad idea?

nOTHING WRONG WITH CLEAN SAND..........IF IT'S BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS SINCE IT'S BEEN CLEAN IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T HURT. dON'T REMEMBER THE SIZE OF YOUR CAGE?

cAn you post a picture of your anuimals for us? It would be great as then it would help us to access the health of your lizards before you put them down........Cheers!!!

Ohh awesome! thanks for the help.
I'll get some photos together to let you see them. I'd like that actually then i can see if they need help or not. we dont have any vets around here that really know the species.

i'll try to get photos somtime this weekend for you guys.. latest maybe mid week. my digital camera happened to walk off last month unfortunatly :/

the last time i did a real good sand change was maybe two months ago? possibly a month and a half. I do spot checks every day when i get home to keep things clean.

the hls are currently in a 10 or 15 gal... i really do think its a ten. i know its retardedly too small but i was going to purchase a 40 long and set it up while they hibernate.

i'll update you asap! ^^

If your only keeping two lizards and that's going to be it, I would rcommend a standard 40 gallon which is wider than the 40 long. The 40 is very adequate for two and they should do well in that size cage. The long is fine, I'm not knowing it,but I think having the depth on it is also good, so that's just my thinking about it......

Ohh you know what. I think i made a mistake on the tank size.
The one i would be getting is a 40 reptile style tank... so its deeper and much shorter...

I hope that is better. More area for sure. I havent gotten to see it myself, but if i can get a 60 i am going to go for it.

Lets see how christmas treats me lol

The tank is small i know, but i will be upgrading asap to a 40gal or 60 if i can get it. Its a planted tank with an aloe and some suculents. One is flowering at the moment with a nice pink flower.. ^^

Let me know what you think... I am working on getting my two guys into hibernation. But if somthing looks wrong please let me know. Thanks!!
