Needing advice on "darker" blizzard project

skmcwilliams Oct 26, 2005 10:23 PM

I hate to use midnight as it gets passed around a little to easily out there. But yes I do have a black leo and yes he stays that way all the time. I was able to breed the black one in the pic with the normal blizzard last year. Unfortunately a accident happened with the incubator and I lost all eggs but one and it hatched to make the girl in the photo, first her baby pic and now as an adult. She is dark and stays dark but not the satin black that her dad is. Now my question she will be brumated and bred this year as she is 50 grams now. AS much as I hate it I am guessing the only way to prove what this trait is would be to breed her back to her father right? yuck... Okay so just from looking at her color does she look like more of a line bred trait or could she possibly be a het to a true midnight?

I don't know they answer to your question, but I just wanted to say she is pretty!

That's what I personally would do. Most "Line-bred" and "Recessive" traits started something like that. If you feel comfortable doing it, than do it. If you don't feel comfortable, then I wouldn't do it. It's just your personal preference..

What about getting some more female normal blizzard for your male. And a new normal male blizzard for your new baby dark female breed them to there given parners the pick you best dark babys then back breed them. That way it's not so direct so would't seem so bad.It a nother way to go about it anyway.

imbreeding isnt so uncommon in alot of the animal world, and the easiest way to isolate specific traits. it causes mutations in humans because of replicated genes(im pretty sure) but this diversity of genes isnt what you want if youre trying to isolate one.

the only other way would be to have more than one bloodline, for example another pair of parents to make a male of similar coloration and breed him with your female.
