evercraig190 Oct 27, 2005 01:45 PM

hi all, i need to buy a thermostat...and i was looking at the ranco ones by the boaphile but they are 100 bucks...a little out of my range..im only hooking up about 100 watts of flexwatt and i was wondering if there was any other thermostat that would almost as good but cheaper...i was thinking of the Electronic BAH-1000 Thermostat from Big Apple herp but i dont know how good they are..i thought of buying two of these that way i would have a back up in case one failed..as in have them both hooked up at the same time...i also saw a the ALife 1000 and was wondering if that was any good also...thanks for the replies...this is an important part of my cage so i need to do the right thing..thanks...

I use the Alife on my GTP cage and it actually works quite well for a cheapy tho the cage is small (12x12x16) so I'm not sure if there would be any problems with something bigger. I've also seen some of the Rancos and Johnsons on sale for down to $50 if you check the classifieds.

don't go cheapo on your thermostats,it's not worth the risk!!!! you can get the ranco with a powerstrip for $85 at MG Reptiles.com. they advertise right here on kingsnake. i just ordered one myself.

I believe the Alife 1000 and the BAH-1000 are the same thing with a different sticker on them. If that is the case, in my opinion they are both junk. I purchased a BAH-1000 and it was extremely inacurate. It didn't cycle off until the heat tape got a lot hotter than I set it. I won't waste my money again.

Don't waste your money on a "back-up"...buy a Helix basic system for a little over $100 and you won't need a back-up. I have been using Helix thermostats for 11-12 years,on all of my Flexwatt applications, and in my incubators and have never had a problem. Most of mine are 10-12 years old...the new ones are even better. The first thermo I ever purchased was a Ranco and it was a peice of crap. The next one I purchased was a Helix and I have not purchased another brand since.

I have purchased several new Ranco t-stats on Ebay for under $50 each. I bought some for less than $40 each. We are currently using Rancos, Johnsons and Helix on our racks and Helix on our incubator. All are performing satisfactorily.
