Zoo Med Repti Temp

tanias16 Oct 27, 2005 02:24 PM

I'd like your opinions on the Zoo Med Repti Temp Rheostat
Does it work well?
Is there anything cheaper I could get to do the job?
I just need it for an UTH.
Thanks

I make my reastats. I use a dimmer switch, a outlet, and a cord.Costs me about $25 to make and I mount them to my cages.

I agree that a thermostat is the best way to go, but I don't use them either due to the expense. I use a dimmer switch that you plug your UTH into. You do have to check your temps periodically as they will fluctuate if your temp in your house fluctuates very much. They are available at Lowe's and at Meijers for just over $10.00 ea. Here is the one I use and really like them:

That is sweet. I will save a ton of time with that. I use heatrope and it gets way too hot. Thanks for sharing.

Always glad to help out I've had really good luck with them.

If you have the right size UTH you shouldn't need one. I set up a tank for a customer and checked the floor temp. It was 89 degrees inside of my 73degree house. It says on the instructions to unplug it if it is more than 80degrees in your house

I have to disagree. It also depends on how the tank is actually set up.
For example, my 40breeder tank is in a stand that I built out of wood. It also has a hood. I bought the right UTH for it but because all of the tanks' sides are covered except for the front, the temp WILL read 105 if I don't use a thermostat. My house is a constant 70.

same here, I'm hiting 104 and its 75 in my house.

Thanks for the lamp dimmer info.. I was actually on my way to home depot to buy one lol.

Every UTH has to have some type of control in place to be safe. The Zoomed dimmers/rheostats are ok but like said before you can make a better one.. The Zoomed thermostat woudl be a better choice..
