dead rat snake

I bought a black rat snake about a year and a half ago. It only live about a month. I keep a few boas and a corn snake and am aware of the care requirements for black rat snakes. They were one of my favorite snakes as a kid. That particular one is the only one I ever tried to keep. During the time I had it, it ate three fuzzies (it was about two feet long and they went down easy). Anyway, it had a look that has been described as bug eyed (it had big, but otherwise normal-looking eyes). Could this have been a cause of it's death?
Thanx all.

The degree of exophthalmia that I would worry about is when the skull is so deformed you can see sclera (you see a lot of these snakes as having that rim of different coloured tissue, and often bugged out and deviated somewhat downwards). Normally baby black rats are somewhat bug-eyed in appearance because their eyes are proportionately quite large compared to adults.
It's entirely likely something else killed your pet. That's too bad. A professional necropsy would've been useful.
