I am building a snake rack help

snakeboi69 Oct 27, 2005 07:02 PM

I know hot to build a snake rack out of plywood but I do not know How to insatll the heater or what I use to heat it with. I also do not know the exact dimentions for the rack because I do not know the size of bins that I need. I would like to house 3 maybe more females 1 male and their young so what size should I make the rack? What size bins do I need for baby, juvinile, and adult ball pythons? How much space should I leave between the bin and higher shelf?

You need to decide what size tubs you will use, then build your rack to fit the tubs. Use flexwatt to heat the rack. Here are examples of the racks and tubs we use. The size of tub needed just goes along witht he size of snake that will be in it. Babies use small shoebox sized, young adults use sweaterbox sized, adults use blanket sized(tubs that are approx. 3ft x 1.5 ft)

Sorry fot not making a whole new topic but I'm considering getting a plastic shoebox (clear) or a sweater box for a hatchling that I will get in the spring. I know people use them but are they safe? Ventilation and sterile wise? I'm not going to make him live in a sweater box forever but just long enough untill I get another vivarium. So are they safe? and where do I buy the shoebox or sweater box? I dont have a rack system or anything.

Tubs are fine. just make sure you put heat tape under the rear to provide a thermal gradient. Also, I'd suggest you use a soldering iron to melt some holes in the side for ventilation

If you are only going to have one snake it would not really be worth going to the effort to heat it. Heat tape requires a thermostat and by the time you buy everything you could have just bought a used tank or whatever, because if you use a tank with a screen lid you will be able to use a regular heat light (ceramics are the best, just dont get one that is too powerful.

Yea only 1 for me, still looking for some. Got the tub and everything ready just hope it isn't too cramped. Its 16x12x8. Its just a tub I will get a 20 Gl long or 30 GL tank when he is a sub-adult.

what size flexiwatt do I need? Do I need to cut holes in the shelves to run the flexiwatt? there will be 8 shelves of snakes(three large snakes wide but there will be two snakes in depth in the first two shelves, 4 smaller snakes wide and two snakes in depth on the next 6 shelves) And I would like to run the heat under the snakes. I will try to draw a diagram s=snake
