1000 dollars to spend what would you do with it???

alphadragon Oct 27, 2005 10:38 PM

O.K. So I breed High Bearded Dragons and I have always loved BCI's!! Even before all the crazy morphs came out. Basically I am looking to pick up some nice Hets or Codom traits so I can produce something interesting. I am just trying to do this as a hobby because I really like Boas. These are the morphs that I like Pastels, Anery, Snows, Sunglow, and Salmons.

O.K. I would be willing to spend a little more than 1000. Any combinations or breeding group ideas would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
Randy

Getting a Hypo Het Ghost and an Anery, that would equal about $1000, In that pairing you would produce Ghosts, Anery's, Hypos, and Normals. Or you could get an Albino and a het albino, and produce more albinos. Or you can get 2 nice Hypos and produce nice super Hypos. But with only $1000 that is pretty much all the ideas I have. Good luck and be sure to post pics of what you get...

Yeah I know 1000 isn't much but I am not looking to invest in anything. I am trying not to take it too seriously but like most herpers once the cycle starts it is all over. Oh and around tax time I am going to have to ban myself from all the Boa sites...lol
Thanks again,
Randy

Or you can go with an Albino and an Anery raise them up and have double hets for snow. It would take you a long time to produce Snows, but if it is just a hobby I think it would be cool to start your own project from scratch and produce your own double hets and see them produce Snows for you.

getting into the dwarf and locality boas, moreso the morphs. This is something I feel still has alot of potential, or moreso than the average albino, anery or hypo.

Once the hypo sonorans are recognized or accepted by all to be proven, and once the power of this animal is realized, through true hypo leopards and more, I think their prices will sky rocket.

As it is, I know some breeders that were sold out for this year AND NEXT YEAR before they even had this years litters drop!!!!!!

I've had other big breeders tell me straight up, once they are proven without a doubt, there is no reason they should not be $2000 and $3000 each, like the CBB hypo Nicaraguans.

I feel the same about the hypo Cancun Boas, and any other central american that is pure and true.

Some of the morphs and lines of animals we have today are soo colorful because of the CENTRAL AMERICAN influence in them!
We sometimes lose focus of how many of our bci may be integrades, and how many of our bci morphs may have come from central american matriarchs.

Crossing bci with bcc to improve color is disgraceful in the eyes of many, but crossing bci with bci is not as damaging to most.
Heck, most even say the boundaries between bci are so variable, it is almost like trying to gaurantee one bcc to be surinam and one bcc to be guyana, while they were caught within the same distance of an imaginary border.

So, i'm just listing facts, opinions, experiences and more.

I think the dwarfs are the future.

I LOVE working with these animals!

Take care, Joe Rollo - Bci Joe

I concur with Joe. I was in the exact same situation as you were about 6 months ago. I freed up some extra cash and went the dwarf route almost exclusively. I did purchase a large albino and dh sunglow to help fund future projects but those projects will consist almost entirely of dwarfs.

I didn't know there was any speculation on if they where for sure or not? I picked up a female from Rio Bravo recently, and I was under the impression that it was a proven trait? I know there are several big breeders that are working with them. I have always liked Sonorans, and thought the hypo would be a neat project too. It does seem like sometimes its hard to tell the difference between Hypos and nice Normals...Just curious what you thought...Ohh by the way I am glad the female reverse striped hog is doing good, it will be interesting to see what she produces in the future..

the cancuns weren't as accepted as the nics or sonorans yet... people haven't really realized they're hypos yet..
Gus had been breeding/producing the hypos for years, but didn't call them such until just recently..

Size of the snake, pattern and color varients all need to be considered. But with $1k, and interest in morphs, why not get a pair of DH Snow. Prices for a pair of DH Colombian Kahl Strain Snows are $1000-$1500. This way you could produce albinos, anerys, and snows. All which you mentioned an interest, and as a hobby project this will have a lot of cool results!

I would go with one of the best silverbacks I could find.

10 years ago i had $900.00 to spend. I went for volume instead of one or two high end items and now I own a reptile import business that does over $100,000.00 a month in gross sales.
I suggest you get your license and dont ever pay retail for a snake again.
