Special License??

sardoniccheese Oct 27, 2005 11:49 PM

Is there any license that you have to obtain to breed and sell leopard geckos? In other words, if I am doing this as a hobby, and I make like a website, and sell them, do I have to be a business?

I don't think you would need a special license. But if you are going to sell them, you would need to operate as a business. (You would need a DBA, and report your earnings). Try going to a place that sells gecks online and ask them.

Actually, selling a few geckos does not qualify as a business... It all depends on how much you earn for them whether or not they're "reportable income" to any state or federal agency. You just need to find the income guidelines for reportable income and keep track of how much you make from the geckos. If its over that certain amount.. then you qualify as a business.

So say I invest 1000 dollars into a leopard gecko project. And I sell the babies for a total of 1500 dollars. Would the whole 1500 count or just the 500 profit that I made?

I am not sure what state you are in but I may be able to help as I have just gone through a lot of this. In my case I DO NOT have to report my income if its $500 or less per year, And yes if you invest $1000 and made $1500 you h ave to report the entire $1500. You may only get taxed for $500 but you must report it. Where I live I do not have to opperate uinder any licence. I am in an unincorperated part of my county and my county has yet to adopt any licence laws for unicorperated areas. The best thing to do is first contact your county recorders office and ask them about a licence, Then contact your countys building department and make sure you are zoned properly if aplicable. If you have customers coming to your house then you must contact your building department. Then if all checks out call the IRS at there 1800# to ask any remaining questions. Trust me it may take a couple weeks to get all the answers but its well worth it. I actualy was able to open for business very easily
