I'm going to build a rack and am wondering what you guys and gals think of that heat cable stuff. You know, the 20' or so skiny red cable. Can I just fix that to the back wall of the rack or should I go with somthing else. I don't really like the idea of sticking flexwatt to plywood so...

I run heat cable underneath the substrate in my big tank to help keep the temps right. Its not red it's grey - the kind you get at big apple - it doesn't appear to get hot enough to cause any kind of damage to the substrate or animals - even at full blast its warm not hot - but it sure does do a good job at heating up an otherwise impossible tank!

I have used flexwatt taped to wood, with foil tape, for over a year with out a problem. It works great. I also use a thermostat with it and keep it around 102 degrees. This gives 95-100 surface temp in the cage above the tape.

I was worried sliding the tub would wear the tape, but nothing yet.

Cheers,
Al
