My beardie has a curled tail

SandyClaws Jul 21, 2003 08:16 PM

I have a small bearded dragon that I just got for my son. Its tail is curled like a pigs. i was wondering if that was normal or if there is anthing wrong with it. I have pics if you would like to see them. email me at iscariot1977@hotmail.com . thanks!

well it depends on what you mean "curled"...if it curls up, that just means they are alert, such as at feeding time. If it curls a weird way, and is permanent, it could either be a kink in the tail or part bitten off and twisted by another littermate when being raised by the breeder. post some pics, itll help a lot more, so we can be more specific.

just a few thoughts. if it is curled like a pig tail it could be a birth defect.

does it eat well? does it have poor ballance, does it fall over? does it constantly stay arched as if looking up? if so it could be neurological. diagnosing over the net is hard enough but without pics and a lot more info... its not possible.

good luck

It doesn't fall over or anything like that. He eats really well...about 20 or more crickets a day. He is very alert and loves to be held. Nothing really seems wrong at all. He does have a little curve of the spine and the tail is curled up all the time. He never lets it lay flat. I posted a pic..I hope it works. Thanks.

its probably from the position it was in while in the egg. the tail is not a problem, the spine may become one. most of the breaders I know would euthanise animals that have the potential for severe health problems. its hard to get attached to our little loved ones and then find out they require special care or that they are suffering and need to be euthanised. dragons are very strong animals and get get along without toes, missing limbs, dropped tails... hopefully the spinal curve will not get worse with age. its sad to think about but as animals get older the small problems become harder to live with as with people. you should probably consult someone knoledgable that can examine the animal personally. if you go to a vet, make sure they are familiar with herps. hope things work out for the best.

good luck

LOL!..That's not "normal" but very, very cute. My guess is a birth defect, curled like that in the egg. In your case, it looks like an asset, for the cuteness factor.
I have an adult female that has a 90 kink in her tail. When she is basking on her log it is normal to half way, then it has a right angle in it, pointing down. She happens to be my favorite though. I think it gives them an endearing quality and different then everyone elses dragon.

LOL....omg, he's so cute!! Even if it is an abnormality, it doesn't sound like it's affecting his health. Who knows, you may have a new morph of curly tailed Bearded Dragons!

As someone else posted, it's not 'natural' so to speak, but as long as the little guy is healthy, you ahve nothing to worry about.

Again, tha'ts the sweetest thing I've seen in awhile!!

It's the first Chameleon / Bearded Dragon hybrid. LOL

Just kidding. It does look like a Chameleon tail though. Very cute.
Keep us updated on him/her.

That was what I was joking around with. It's cute though.
