Q #2 - How do you soak a bp?

bpconnection Oct 28, 2005 05:05 PM

What is the best method for soaking a ball. I've heard it said a ton, and didn't know the best method. You have to keep them from escaping, but you also don't want to drown 'em!

a friend of mine came up with a clever way to do it. use 2 identical tubs, drill holes in the bottom of one and fill the other with water(lukewarm). put the snake in the tub with the holes, place the lid on it and slide it into the tub of water. this helps to keep the snake from stressing because of the gradual submersion and you'll never have to worry about drowning because there is always air space at the top.

i use a plastic tub with a lid and put 1 inch of water in it works well for me.
ps it needs air holes.

At the pet store where I bought my ball, they suggested soaking and sold me a "Kritter Keeper" plastic cage. When I first tried soaking my ball, the water was just deep enough to cover my snake's back. While she could easily keep her head above water, she still spent her time swimming against the side of the cage. Someone whom I met on these forums suggested that I use less water next time so that she can't swim. If there's less water, she should sit still and soak. I fed her today, so I'll probably try that technique sometime next week.

What size containers did you use. Neither of my snakes has used the hides that I made, so I'll probably try to make something else.

Do you only soak when they're in shed, or are there other times you may soak them?

If I am soaking to soften and remove a poor shed, or a retined eye cap (Oh no!) I just use a damp pillow case. (Not cold) In the time it takes me to clean cages and whatnot, the skin is usually ready to slide off. Sometimes just a bit longer.

I will put it under a light so it does not get too cold.

This method has done me well in the past.
