measuring snakes

stage9 Oct 28, 2005 05:16 PM

I often see legnth measurements on posts and was wondering how you all measure your snakes. I have 1.1 corn snakes (juveniles) and I have attempted to measure them with useless results. How do you all get the snake to stretch out so you can measure it and what do you use to measure it?
Thanks!

Are you reading this??? Are you that hungry for info??? LoL

shed skins can be 35% longer than the actual snake. so dont measure the shed skin.

here at herron reptile imports. we use rope or cotton string.
start at the head and trace the length of the snake then measure the rope(string).

DUH!! Now why didnt I think of that(the rope thing)!

I just crudely eyeball it by knowing exactly how long the cage is in each dimension. My snake'll occasionally stretch out when crawling around, so when she does so against a side, I can give a pretty good guess.

Google snake wedge, it's a program that you download on your computer and take a digital picture of your snake with something of known size in it, like a ruler. Then it calculates how long your snake is, even if it's all curled up. I love it, use it all the time, and have tested it against the string method which is very difficult for some snakes, and it has proven out. I understand there are other programs out there too, not sure what they're called though. Just google it and you should be able to find it. Good luck, Eric-
