Cheap hidespot idea

WanderingLost Oct 28, 2005 07:37 PM

Ok, so I was thinking. Those fancy caves and whatnot you get at petco are so expensive. Unless you are going for that natural look, which gets hard on your wallet when own more than a few reptiles you dont need anything that fancy for hidespots. So i got this Idea and i wanted to know if anyone else was doing it, and whether or not I was a good idea, or if It wouldnt work. PVC pipes for plumbing come in different shapes and sizes for different needs like drain traps, etc. I thought these different pipes would make good hidespots. Is anyone else doing it, or know of anyone that has done it?

yeah, definitely a good idea. There are lots of household items and stuff you can find at home depot that works great for hides. proexotics.com has a lot of good inexpensive ideas for reptile husbandry. Example: Terra cotta flower pot saucers work great for snake hides if turned upside down and if you knock a little part of the lip off with a hammer for an entrance. Also, expensive "basking heat lamps". You can use a 45 watt flood light with a dome from home depot for less than half the cost of the brand name "repitle" products.

i have used with good sucess:
PVC pipes
paper towel rolls
toilet paper rolls
bulk egg creats
whipped cream tubs
yogurt cups
flower pots
cork board
hampster play tubes
cracked coffee cups
eatin' up thin cookie boxes
burnable CD cases
...and the list goes on. i'm cheap and will throw in anything that comes sterile or is easy to clean. my zoo seems to appeciate the change of scenary on a regular basis.
