What species is the "red iguana"?

joeysgreen Oct 29, 2005 02:40 AM

Pictures would be awesome too? Is the care and husbandry the same as the New World greenies?

THanks

Sorry, no pictures. The dealers here are very sensitive about having pictures taken where I live.

The "red iguana" by appearance seems to be simply Iguana iguana. Since I have not yet been able to get any locality data on them, it is possible that it is a "designer" iguana, kind of like the morphs of many other reptiles on the market (my guess). I have a hard time believing that they are a previously unknown iguana that just popped into the market, especially with the popularity of iguanas.

They are not "native" to Indonesia, there are no species of Iguanidae native to Indonesia, but the ones that I have seen all have been captive bred in Indonesia.

As written in an earlier post by Flavia, I find the green iguana much more attractive.

If anyone else has locality data on this animal, please post it, there are many people interested in it.

It's the green iguana, but with red coloration overpowering the traditional green coloration.

It may be a designer iguana, or simply a regional morph, since green iguanas from different areas in South America have some different characteristics, from spikes, to coloration, etc.

Husbandry is the same for a green iguana.
