I have finally hatched one of my own!

Ptindy Oct 29, 2005 11:23 AM

Hey everyone, last night I tried getting into the movies to see the Saw 2 everywhere I could but it was all sold out, and I was pretty bummed. But now that I know what was waiting for me when I got home I'm glad I missed out! Last night I hatched out my first Uroplatus! A sikorae sikorae. It looks to be female, lots of mossy pattern. I took a few quick pics this morning when I got up, last night it was shedding when I found it. I'm still waiting on the clutchmate and then 3 more clutches over the next few months. Here are the pictures, they are a pretty bad I didn't want to handle 'her' too much. I'm so excited haha. Good to see this after so many duds from my satanics this summer. The incubation time was 93 days.

Thanks for looking and enjoy!

Mike

don't see too many cb sikorae around right now, great lookin animals. and from the pattern i would also have to guess female. don't think i've seen any clouded males ( yet, i'm sure someone will prove me wrong)
anyways, GREAT looking hatchling and good luck with it!

Hey thanks for the kind words everyone, i'm very excited about this little "girl" and i hope to see more!

Flamedcrestie: Thanks for the words. I bet the theory could get proven wrong, but like satanics and henkeli they are pretty sure signs of the sex.

Eve: I hope to see more kids here also. I definately did go buy a mini cigar from 7/11 ahaha...No coookies though, sorry :P Those kind words were the least I could do Eve, us Uroplatus peeps gotta stick together for the good of the genus :P

Mike: Thanks, yea you don't see many being hatched out. I feel lucky to have this pair. You have had a very great year. I hope mine is as successful as yours next with the satanics. I've just gotten duds. Were you ever stuck at this point? I will get pictures in the next couples days. The baby looks a lot like it's momma. The black markings between the eyes are present on her as well but not the father, wonder if it genetic or a sex identifying trait.

MissKiwi: Hey, well I keep them in a large exoterra. That would be the smallest I would go for a pair. I have a cork bark tube in the back the height on the tank upright, about 6 different sized sticks i collected in the bush with different color bark and diameters. Then a rubber tree plant in the middle with a patch of sphagnum moss in the back corner. The female laid all her eggs under the moss. I have a mixture or orchid bark, sphagnum peat moss, sphagnum moss and top soil as a substrate. I spray them every night making everything nice and wet, keep them below 75. Now that it is winter though I'm spraying everynight but a lot less, sometimes i miss a night and I keep my geckos around 70 and 65 at night so they can have a break and then after february i'm going to heat things up and spray more again. I've had this pair since February of this year. They were about 8 months old and they started breeding in july. So they were just over a year old when they started. Good luck with your pair and ask as many questions as you like, i'll try my best to help. Take care.

Thanks again eveyrone and good luck with your Uroplatus. Wish I was in the states with ya so we could trade.

Well, I have more time then I thought tonight so I took some pictures. The first is of the father, it was when I got him. He basically looks the same except for a little larger and his regenerated tail is a bit bigger.

The next two are of the momma. This first one I took tonight. She looks a lot like the baby at times but not now, very dule but she can color up a lot. She has the same black dots on the body and the same black lines between the eyes. You can see them on the baby in one of the 4 pictures. This is the physical trait i'm wondering about, is it genetic or sex dependent. Her regenerated tail has not grown back nearly as much as the male but I think she has been putting it on hold to help develop her eggs. I hope she is done breeding now that I have cooled them down, started feeding less often, and spray less.

This picture is from about 2 months ago when she was all fired up with the most brilliant colors I have seen from here. From greens, tans, greys and browns to blacks, yellows and stuff. Right before this I had her out and was pulling off some skin she didn't fully shed off. Then I was trying to give her some drops of liquid calcium. Needless to say she didn't like it much and started to try to bite me haha.

Thanks for looking. Mike I can get more pictures of the father if you wish.

well, i can never say no to more pics, but i see you had some very nice looking adults to start with. no wonder the offspring turned out so nice. and to answer your question from the previous post, i actually didnt get into a rut with dud eggs until after my 1 female who laid me all those eggs this season stopped laying. 2 more females started laying duds soon after, and ive been tweaking things to see if i can get them to put out some fertile eggs, because i know for a fact ive seen at least one of these females mating.

What kind of setup do you keep your sikorae in, and how long have you had them?

Ptindy Oct 30, 2005 06:46 PM

Here is the clutchmate! Sorry the pictures aren't very good, i'm horrible with my camera and I didn't wanna keep taking photos over and over the little thing musta been pretty scared. Last night while I was in I looked at the container and no hatchling so I decided to place it in a dark place so that it may decide to come out (i had lights on in the room). I planned on checking every once and a while so that maybe I could catch it hatching, I have never caught any of my geckosin the process, always right after. Well last night I looked an hour later after placing it in the cupboard and the little guy was already completely outta the egg! I was just like whaaa haha. Anyways, this one I'm not too sure about the sex. It has black dots and the same two lines between the eyes as the mother but not so blotched up as the other one. I'm going to look later tonight after it has been running around for a bit. I would guess another female if I had to but I am not so sure as the last. I'll try to grab better pics in time. Enjoy, cause I sure am!

Thanks for looking,
Mike

TOO CUTE!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

flamedcrestie Oct 31, 2005 10:58 AM

well, i can still see noticeable blotching on that one too. i would have to say female from that picture/color pattern.
does anyone have any "clouded" males?
