Keep them together or separate them ....

toshamc Oct 29, 2005 12:18 PM

Is there any advantage one way or another of keeping your breeding pairs together versus separating and reintroducing them? I know people do it both ways.

I put Fender and Sarobi together they bred for a day - then I waited a day and separated them - fed Fender and reintroduced them a couple days later - they went right back at it again - but this time I've left them together and tho they curl up together - they haven't hooked up again. Not that I expect them to be continuously going at it - but thought since they aren't they might be more comfortable separated.

Thoughts?

If I wanted a male to breed multiple females, I wouldn't keep reintroducing them. When they're done, they're done.

If it was his only female, I'd keep them together - she might feel more comfortable with daddy around. LOL

Don't know if this helped too much...

I usually just keep them together for the entire breeding and only seperate them during feeding. This year I am planning on mating the male with more then one female so I have to see how that goes.

Thanks,
Mohamed

P.S.
Good job on the week in review!

Trust me keep doing what you are doing alot of males need that seperation and reinterduction to keep it going. I have noticed that a male who is left together with the female will start to get cage lazy and wont show a hole lot of interest after a few breedings. I like to introduce a male into the females cage and leave him with her for two-three days and then remove him and give him a two-three day rest. This helps to give him time to sorta build up a good (load) before hooking back up with the female. And also you will see that the few days rest inbetween females will go a long way with your males. They wont burnout too quickly which does happen alot more with the young males. With this method you should have no problem running 5 females per male. Good luck Paul at STEEL CITY EXOTICS

Tosha, you're married. You KNOW that a break is needed LOL. I put males in for a few days, then rest for a few days. The cycle is not set in stone. Sometimes when it's time to remove the male, he decides to "hook-up". In this case, I leave them together.

Thanks Jay - Yeah - I think because Fender is still eating that I can do 4 days together 3 days seperate as I am having to take him out for feeding anyway. So I'll just give him time to digest and recoup - then put them together again until the next feeding day - then separate them for digestion and recouperation. Since I'm not using him with anyone else at the moment this will work fine.

Thanks again!
