Light/Temp dimmer question

Malays Oct 29, 2005 04:19 PM

Hi
I wanted to ask if anyone knows of any place that carries light dimmer that can shut bulb off or open it up all the way but it has to be type that plugs directly into socket and than I simply plus my light hood into that.
I have a zoo med rheo and its okay but at lowest setting seems to bring a 60 watt bulb to around 40 watts which isnt what I need.
I want to be able to lower it more depending on days temp. The Zoo med works very well but limits how low I can go.
I dont want a dimmer that needs the tiniest bit of wiring, etc just want to plug it in than plug my light into that.
I have looked in home depot and hardware store but all their models require wiring.
Any ideas,etc ?
thanks

I think your going to be stuck with wiring the dimmer.

If you do decide to do the wiring it's farely simple, I may have a few ideas and can talk you through the wiring itself.

I can't think of any dimmer's that plug into a wall nor can I think of a reason why anyone would want one, other than you perdicament.

If you decide to wire and need advice let me know.

Thanks I am going to go this coming week to local electrical place to see what they have.
They might have pre wired on hand for sale.

I bought exactly what you are discribing at either Lowe's or Home Depot, I can't remember which. It's a lamp dimmer. You just plug the light into this device, then plug the device into the outlet. I was actually looking for one that I could wire myself and had to settle for this one. It costs a little more. Here a picture of it.
Good luck,
Kirk

Lamp dimmers are great. not only do you get a temp you want, it extends the life span of the bulb. But they also make an in line version. Small unit that clips on the cord. But I have not seen them in some time. If anyone finds them, and at a good price let me know too. Good lcuk

I bought the lamp dimmer yesterday that UAWPREZ told me about. I must say its a 100 times better than the reptile types that are sold.
This can lower the wattage down to zero or all the way up. The reptile made type I have can only lower the wattage roughly 10 to 15 watts max.
I wonder why reptile companies that put out rheos dont make them this way.
I see why people rather put together/make their own stuff rather than buy name brand reptile supplies.
