Behavior question.....

msalem Oct 29, 2005 06:22 PM

Last month I got a ball from someone and they told me it was a female (because a vet told them) so I took their word for it but when I placed this female (2000 gram) with a proven male, in around 2 minutes she (which I think is a he now) started whaling on him with her body without him even trying to make a move on her or anything so I automatically assumed that she must be a he. Am I wrong or do females sometimes behave this way? She is too big for me to pop and I know I should have her sexed but do I really need to? I just feel that if females don't normally behave that way then there is no need for me to pay to have her/him sexed do I? Any opinions or personal experience would be appreciated because I have only witnessed this behavior before between 2 males and never with a female.

Thanks,
Mohamed

Hi There!

Females sometimes behave aggressively if they are not "in the mood." I think it's a little early to assume it's a boy. Give a try at popping it. Big snakes can be popped, and if it's a boy sperm ought to come out immediately, even if you don't see penes.

Good luck!

Any size ball can be sexed by popping if you use the proper technique and few do. I you doubt that you can ask Jeremy Stone who saw mw easily pop a 7 ft. Aner boa in Orlando. I showed him how to do it properly,{ different technique than most use} and Brian Gundy from For Goodness Snakes can also do it very well.

The answer is nothing, you cannot tell the sex of the animal. On hatclings there is the possibility of injury. But the traditional method of popping is far more dangerous than the method I use.

Well describing it is not exactly accurate but instead of the pushing aspect of normal popping you roll the tail against the side of you thumb abd use the ntural hydraulics of the animal to roll the Hemipenes or scent glands out. Much easier and more accurate than the "normal" way of doing it.

ajpreptiles Oct 29, 2005 08:34 PM

I thought the "normal" way to pop was to roll it like you said. I have rarely seen anyone doing any pushing. ??????

BelgianBeer Oct 29, 2005 08:45 PM

By pushing I mean the way that people use the ball of the thumb to move towards the cloaca, I you see the way I do it, it is completely different. I have been doing it my wat for ove 20 years and not one single person has ever done it my way until they have been taught. I also have been the one to pop Eryx Johnni for Rick staub of R&R reptiles when no one else could.

You should create some kind of instruction sheet on this method and post it here so everyone can learn. I know I would like to know how its done. Andy.

Not even close. Again I have been doing this for 20 years and have seen the way others do it, not even remotely the same.

Can you get someone to take some "frame by frame" pics of your popping technique? I'd love to see how it's done and I'm sure others would too, especially if it's so much more effective.

Actually I am going to try to do that.

What I do (and I think this is what most people do) is to put a little pressure ahead of the cloaca then roll their thumb from several scales down the tail up to the cloaca. If I understand you correctly - you roll the tail up with your thumb? And this usually will work with larger snakes too? I've seen people pop big snakes using the same method I do - but I can never do it that way - I'm always afraid of putting too much presure on them. LOL
