Cuba Herping

shadowman_1_ca Oct 29, 2005 06:24 PM

Hello I will be in Cuba on November 20th and I plan to do some Herping. I looked around a bit on the internet and read that there are some famous bat caves where Cuban Boas perch themselves at the enterance and catch bats as they fly out in the evening. Has anyone here been to these caves or even looked for herps in Cuba? Please give me some advice if you have done any herping there or know what I can expect.thanks in Advance! Colin

Ive been to Cuba on several occassions, mainly the western and southern coastline and interior. There are herps to be found most anywhere you go, I found several of the smaller epicrates and a cuban boa, also many lizards, frogs and turtles. You need to find a guide that can take you out to the more remote areas. DO NOT GO ALONE, Cuba is still a communist country and as such you need to have a chaperone when you are out in the sticks or you could find yourself getting the "mordida" also known as "the bite". Good luck and tell Fidel Brett said thanks for the cigars!

Only one day?? There's a pamphlet guide to the herps of Guantanamo Bay Naval Station (eastern end of Cuba) produced by the San Diego Zoo and the Gtmo Public Works Dept. Perhaps Jeff Lemm can hook you up with a copy.
