Dilema?? Cant be mites

genaroleon Jul 21, 2003 09:39 PM

Ok all my snakes eat frozen thawed.. and have done so for quite a long time now.. i have not received any new snakes, I have not been to any pet stores... I did go to the reptile show here in diego.. but did not come home that weekend.. and took a couple showers before I even came home.. i did not handle any of my snakes in that time....

A while back one of my snakes injured itself..got a nasty cut on its head.. a real nasty one that I have been putting neosporin on for a while now... i just looked at the snake today and noticed little bugs crawling around the area?? my substrate is newspaper... and a humid hide with green moss... the bugs do not appear to be around the eyes... they are roaming around the nose area.. and primarily where the cut is.... what the heck are they?? Ugh if they are mites... I really have no clue as to how they go in there... there is nothing that I have been around that would even cary mites

It could still be mites even though they are white. Check out VPI's website. They have info on mites. Mites have different life stages and in one stage they do appear white and they have to eat to get to the next stage. Sounds like they are eating right off of your snakes wound too. My advice would be to get some Proventamite and fast.

Good luck

There are thousands of species of mites, and they are EVERYWHERE. For example, there are house mites living in your chairs. But they are not the common snake mite which is what we herpers worry about. Perhaps the moss in your wet hide carried in the bugs. If so, they probably feed on bits of the plant rather than on a snake. You might try taking a piece of the moss, putting it in a funnel above a little vial of alcohol, and shining a hot light on the moss. The heat should drive the bugs down so that they fall into the alcohol. Then you'd have a sample to get identified. Good luck.
