Handleing honduran milk snake youngsters

gtk4158a Oct 30, 2005 09:17 AM

Hi there,
My questions are as follows:

I have 2 honduran milksnakes.one is aprox 18 inches and i would guess a early 05 hatchling and the other is about 14 inches and a rather recent hatchling. They are i am told quite normal in that they are quite "livley". I need to know when and how much to handle them to get them relativly "tame".I have them housed in there own aquarium. the older one is in a 15 gallon tank with heating pad and and 60 watt heat lamp on the hot end and the other younger snake in a 5 gallon with same heat set up.the older one eats like a pig. The younger one didnt do well in its bigger tank so i moved her to the 5 gallon tank and she seems to have gotten her appatite back.
I use aspen shavings as tank substrate and they have plenty of hiding places both hot and cold side of tank.Any suggestions would help Thanks Greg

Hi, they will probably "chill-out" after their first year. Some stay radical for longer but with frequent gentle handling they will tame down. Just don't overhandle, if they ever show signs of stress like not eating on schedule I would leave them alone. Remember with the cold season coming(don't know where your at) the risk of colds in newbies is greater.
