How Do Sliders Hibernate, or Do, in Less Than Freezing Temps?

colorfulcritters Oct 30, 2005 12:22 PM

I've three res's that are still in the hatchling stage. Of course they're growing, and aren't newborns. The venue is Florida, however, and right now the temps get into the fifties at night. They're reaching the mid-seventies to low eighties in the day.

My questions are, my pond doesn't have a lot of sunlight and the turts aren't eating much now(except the res,) so should I bring them in? Is it okay to leave them outside(the temps will get colder but not to freezing,)even if they won't burrow and hibernate? Should I provide burrowing debris for them? The ponds only about eight inches deep. Will this in any way effect them?

Moreover, the water is pretty cold due to lack of sunlight. I'm worried they'll not be able to adjust without hibernating, or how they'll get on if they can't warm up and yet can't hibernate, if there's such a thing. I don't know either, how often to feed them or maintain them without keeping a close eye on them. I need to figure out when they're in hibernation and how often I should feed them, etc.

I'm thinking about just buying a tank and bringing them inside. Or will they be fine?

being they are young I would not leave them out. I do this
every year.
