naturalistic leo setup?

stage9 Oct 30, 2005 01:12 PM

I have 1.1 adult leos that I got about a year back in hoes of breeding them, but since then have moved my breeding efforts into rhacodactylus species. I would still like for the leos to breed, but it is not extremely important. I have a 55 gallon tank that I was considering making a naturalistic setup in, and I was wondering if anyone has made natural setups for leos. I have not been able to find much info on thier natural habitat. If anyone has any information that may help me please reply! Any suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!

I would like to put them in a 55 gal(big I know), and I am looking for differrnt features(caves, ledges, etc..) I can build into the landscpe to take up space and give it a natural look/feel. What substrate do you reccomend? I was thinking a sand *gasp* (dont worry they are adults) and coco bedding mixture. Also what kind of plants would be found in thier natural habitat? I was also hoping someone would know of a place I could see pics of what thier natural habitat looks like.
Thanks!

I use rock formations assembled w/silicone for glue as climbing structures and hides. I als ouse a sand/coco mixture, but I feed in bowls on the plexi shelf or in a seperate container, so they do not ingest substrate accidentally while feeding. I also use grapewood, and cork. for plants, I have had good results w/Dracaena, sanseveria, and others (not sure what they are) I will try to get a pic of my 45 to you. would you give me your email? Its too big to post here.

These pics are about a year old. I used heavy slate tiles and playsand, the ledges are grouted styro. I re-finished these cages with lighter (stick on) vinyl tiles and no sand. I changed these mostly to lighten the load, I never had any problems with sand other than it gets on my floor when I am cleaning. Look on the cage photos on this site and you may see some other ideas.

I made those bowls (grouted styro), I just put their calcium in them and silkworms, mealworms or waxworms and they eat. They do figure out where the food is and when they get hungry they go right to the bowl. Just be consistant about putting the food in the bowl and they get the hang of it. I also feed roaches, I dump them in the bowl so they get some calcium on them before they take off running.

I had to "teach" my leos that the bowl is where the food is. I do this by holding the bug w/tweezers right over the bowl, and they focus on it, gradually lower it so they are forced to look over the edge. They still sometimes get confused, but after a while they catch on well.
