Question for breeders, RE: Normals

jtibbett Oct 30, 2005 01:45 PM

My girlfriend suggested that we breed my normal and her snow. I refused, but it got me thinking about breeding programs, and where normals fit into them. It seems to me that unless they're dealing with something selectively bred like Abbot's Okeetees, most breeders aren't going to bother to breed normals because morph breeding will produce lots of normals that are het for this or that.

My normal, for instance, isn't quite "clean," and in fact she's kind of "muddy" (which is OK with me -- I like her just fine). But my point is that it seems like there's no reason to breed normals, especially normals that are "muddy" the way mine is, so she must be a left over, as it were, that's het for something or other, which leads to my question: Is it safe to assume that non-Okeetee normals that come from breeders are het for something?

Here's a random pic:

If they are het for anything that you don't know then its a 50/50 chance your normals carrying SOMETHING. I think your saying that non-okeetee's shouldn't be bred or something but I'm not going to assume that. Also a snow and normal will get you normals het for anery A and amel. So basically just normals. IF your male is het for lets take a wild guess Anery A then 1/2 of the babies will be normal and the other will be Anery A.

I'm not asking what my snakes will produce. As I said, I'm NOT going to breed, so it doesn't matter to me what my snakes will produce. I'm also not commenting on whether normals should be bred. I'm asking breeders whether it's safe to assume that normal, breeder-produced, non-Okeetee corn snakes are het for something.

I thought that may be the case since breeders get lots of normals left over from other breeding projects, and they can't keep them all. It figures, then, that the normals breeders sell are hets left over from other projects.

Your post was very clear... normals are almost ALWAYS byproducts. I don't know of anyone who just breeds normals (breeders) because there is no money in them. It is actually VERY likely that your snake is het for something. Most likely amel or anery. Once again, you won't know unless you breed but those are the two most common.
