Female Identification

malesh02 Oct 30, 2005 02:09 PM

Hey everyone. A local pet store has a large ball python however I am not sure if it is male or female. No one at the store can pop or probe it, a customer couldn't care for it and brought it in. Spurs appear to be very small. Can anyone give me tips on how to tell what it is without popping or probing? Thanks for the help.

None of the visual tips really work. The adult females have larger heads than males, the spurs can be smaller, but unless you have other balls around to compare it too its really not that helpful. Until you probe it you wont know 100%.

Without probing it there is no way to be 100% sure - if it's large - then the best you can do at is to try to pop sperm plugs out of it - but if you don't get any it still doesn't guarantee that its a female - he could just be dry at the time.

Thanks for the help. Guess my best bet is to find someone who can probe it. Seems like that's my only safe bet.
