New day, new ant. Help with ID please

cable_hogue Jul 21, 2003 09:52 PM

I was out today hiking at the place I previously saw the Coronatum on 5/25
I was looking for my old buddies or at least some sign and didn't see a thing. But I did snag this ant that looks very interesting. Can someone help with the ID? Snelling?
Cheers!

It looks like a queen of Myrmecocystus wheeleri The only other possibility would be a Formica. Can you get a clear shot (side view) of the head, need to see the maxillary palps. Look kind of like whiskers, will only be a couple of them. If long almost as long as the head, Myrmecocystus, if very short Formica.

Well, unfortunately he/she got out of the jar. :| Hope I find it before my wife does.

I know the feeling... I am still going with Myrmecocystus wheeleri though.

Thanks for taking a look and posting. I sure appreciate it.
Maybe I'll get another one next trip.
Was that a queen?

Yes it was a queen, it seems that species flies this time of year. So there is a good chance you will find more of them if you get out to that same area soon.
