Jordan & Fishkiller Borneo update

leapin4lizards Oct 30, 2005 04:03 PM

Just wanted to let you both know as you both helped me with advice that my Boreno is doing really, well. He ate readily and has adapted to his housing very well, he now is on the warm side and i have cage carpet underneath the UTH side and working real well..he is now using that rock cave often. He also uses his water bowl though i am picking up a smaller one as the one I got quite large and he doesn't soak in it real long. He uses his whole habitat though i did go bigger. I recently found a site selling cool and resonably priced racks and cages similar to what Jordan told me about.. that are super nice but at the time could not find any. SO might move him to one of those in the near future as I think I would prefer it to what he is in. Anyway, so far so good though he has not pooped yet...that I can find..looking again today. He ate Last Tuesday. Is big area with a lot of cypress so have to hunt for it again. He seems real relaxed and content. : ) I love him but so far he is un named!

I also will be ordering the Helix thermostat soon.

Glad to hear all is good.If you do get a helix and you add more caging just keep the set ups all the same so you can use the helix on all of them. You know what's going to happen don't you.Your going to want more bloods, next thing you know you'll have a half a dozen or so in no time.Good luck, Later,Ethan

i have helix, big apple, and johnson controls...and quite honestly, i am very happy with the johnson controls....you can get way more bang for the buck, especially if you catch them on sale at mgreptiles.com.

they can handle 1500 watts, helix is only 500...i know i know, people say proportional, but, you can set the johnson to kick on and off at one degree difference...so i really don't know if there is that huge of a difference. besides, ins't a little variation good?

Karen,

So glad to hear that your blood is feeling better. I wouldn't worry about it pooping anytime soon. Bloods have a very slow metabolism and can take months to deficate. Its kind of a weird transition between other snakes that go a few days after eating. And a rack set up is great especially if you plan on buying more snakes I've never used a Johnson thermostat like Jason was reccomending but like he even said proportional always equals better. Especially for snakes in small enclosures as you can easily cook a little blood with the heat tape running on full blast for awhile. Thanks so much for the update, and let us know if you need any more assistance!

Jordan, thanks for the info on metabolism. Right now he is 17 1/4" long and eating just a mouse a week..live so far. I am going to try frozen tomorrow..wish me luck. I am super happy he is doing very well and now doesn't burrow underneath anymore he is hanging out in his cave peeking out. I love this snake. I have since i first held him..everyone thought he was so evil but he actually seems to have an awesome temperment to me.

Fishkiller..thanks for the dimmer info..got one today. I will try and post pictures very soon so you can see him.

Do you guys have some pics of your snakes you could share with me?

Dimmer switches are good, but if you have a temp. swing in the room, the dimmer will change with it.

Hi Jordan,

I loved the pictures, what are their names? The 2nd one down looks a lot like mines coloring and markings. Thanks for the pics of your rack set up as well. Was helpful..or will be : )

He is in shedding mode now, taking while, he has been extremely pale and eyes all cloudy for 2 days. He lets me handle him still..I am trying to leave him alone so not taking him out as I usually do..just checking on him. Keeping humidity up and since he isn't coming out to soak I am dipping him for a bit..then i put him back.

He is awesome about me getting him out, still hisses but doesn't huff like crazy anymore and as long as I talk to him for like a few seconds he is fine me picking him up. He waspretty intimidating as when he huffed is such a threatening sound but he hasn't done it lately.

I had no luck with the F/T feeding. The most response I got after the 3rd attempt was a strike at it but no grabbing, perhaps that is because I was at the other end and he felt resistance or maybe he didn't like what he felt? I made sure it was very warm. Anyway, I have a live one here now but he was not interested and then went into shed mode.

Anything I am not doing or could try? I tried dragging the mouse a long but that did nothing, when he struck at it I was dangling it, maybe it just pissed him off though!

I love your snakes jordan, they are beautiful, thanks for sharing them!
