Preventative deworming question-

ajpreptiles Oct 30, 2005 08:04 PM

I was talking with a buddy of mine and he told me when he gets a new snake he injects the food items with panacur before feeding to kill internal parasites. I just wondered if this is a safe thing to do or even a good idea at all. Does anyone else do this? I was also wondering if deworming should be done even if there are no signs or symptoms in the snake as a preventative measure, and if so how often and what drug to use? And if injecting the prey item is not a good idea, how would you recommend treating? Thanks!! Andy.

I prefer to test on a yearly basis and if needed, treat then. Although, I normally treat anything new when it comes in. Ball Pythons can get internal parasites fairly easily - especially if you feed live.

I know it is now debatable because of the risks, but one of my vets (back in, oh, about '92) used to give ivermectin to my boas with every yearly checkup. They'd always have a growth spurt right after, presumably because they no longer had to share their food with parasites.

My subsequent vets would not do this unless there was a fecal exam or some obvious signs of parasites.
