IG CRISIS!!!!

herplvr2004 Jul 21, 2003 10:13 PM

I JUST NOTICED MY IG HAS WORMS!!!!THERE ARE SOME SHORT WORMS AND SOME THAT ARE 6 TIMES THEIR SIZE!!!the biggest was about 2 and a half inches. i know that i should take him to a vet but I absolutely cannot afford that!! $200 is alot. Is there anyway i can just get the PANACUR without having to go to a vet and have him check my ig?or can i get a perscription from a vet without having to take those expensive fecal exams?I dont want to have to give my ig away but I really dont have that kind of money. Please dont say that you shouldnt have gotten an ig if your not financially capable because i bought the cage and Decor and that was expensive enough. I just got him a new cage a week ago and now I have this worm problem. PLEASE HELP!!

As I have said time an time again most vets WILL work with you on expenses adn let you pay them out. But You need a vet exam so you can properly diagnose the type of worm and properly medicate it. BEFORE YOU GO CALL AHEAD OF TIME AND SEE WHAT KIND OF ARRANGEMENTS YOU CAN MAKE BECAUSE THEY CAN BE TIME CONSUMING.

--There is a way to treat your Iguana for less than $200. There will probably be many people who will preach at me for this, but so what. Here is a link to Melissa Kaplan's (who is a moderator of and frequent poster on this forum) webpage concerning Reptile Drugs and Dosages: http://www.anapsid.org/resources/rxdose.html

--There are other websites concerning medications and dosages you can find if you look hard enough. I have only personally used the deworming medication Panacur (also called Fenbendazole; also sold at Tractor/Farm Supply stores as Safe-Guard) and an antibiotic called Flagyl (also called Metronidazole; commonly sold in capsule form in Tropical Fish stores as Metrozole). If you do take it upon yourself to treat your Iguana yourself please read as much as you can on the subject. You must know the weight of your Ig in grams and be able to measure the medication accurately. If you make even a slight mistake you will kill your reptile friend.

--It is true that a fecal exam followed by treatment from a vet is the best course of action. However, I am a realist. I know where you are coming from. The fecal exam should be around $15- $20. At least that will tell you exactly what you are dealing with so you know which drugs to use.

Good luck, Rick

I agree with Rick on this. But first things first. Do you have a herp vet? I had a fecal done 2 weeks ago and it was $18.50. If you do a fecal then be straight with them about the cash flow issue (AFTER you get a diagnois... Hee hee)Then a decent vet will tell you just what you need to get. Feed stores and farm supply stores will have what you need. But follow Rick's advice and get his weight exact and know what you are doing. Hate to see a simple matter of worms turn into a toxic mess. Good luck w/your new kid. Let us know what happens. Remember to get a second fecal done when his round of treatment is over to be sure you got them all.

Your vet is totally ripping you off... I can have that done for $50, less if I can talk them into doing the fecal without seeing the animal... The medicine itself costs like $10. If it's nothing or buying the stuff at a feed store, I'd buy the stuff at a feedstore, though.
