Red-tailed green rat snake

Kate Jul 21, 2003 10:28 PM

Hi everyone. I work at a vet's office, and we've just gotten a young red-tailed green rat snake in. We have a good herp vet, but we've never seen one of these guys before. Has anyone here kept red-tailed green rat snakes? This guy had an abcess on top of his head and one on his jaw. Apparently he just tried to shed as well, but has failed miserably at it. We're letting him soak a bit, so hopefully that will be better tomorrow. He's also not eating on his own. He was force fed a small (or maybe hopper) thawed mouse this evening. I read that you can try feeding birds to stimulate their appetite; has anyone had success with this? Tips from anyone who's had experience with this species would be welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Kate

They seem to really like frogs, so scenting a mouse with one might work. Poor thing is probably wild caught.
