Roach colony

CanadianUros Oct 31, 2005 01:11 PM

I was wondering if anyone can suggest some easy roach species to use for a colony. Also how exactly to set up such an operation. My fimbriatus eat so many crickets that it is going to break by bank account. I thought if I could breed some large roaches for them, as well as my lineatus and henkeli, I would only have to feed him a few instead of 20 or 30 crickets.

I have orange spots and orange heads. Both are very easy to keep, and neither seems to be preferred over the other. I like the orange heads personally, but I can't think of a good reason. They're voracious eaters, and probably the less cost-effective of the two...

Just do some research and determine which roach species you would like best. The ones that breed fastest tend to climb, and the ones that don't climb or fly take longer to grow and are harder to get...

One thing to keep in mind, it will be several months before you have a colony large enough to feed from. I thought I'd be feeding off roaches by now, but unless you start with 100 juvies and a dozen pairs (gets pricy) it'll be 3-4 months before you've got enough breeding adults to maintain a producing colony.

i just purchased some orange spots ( b. dubia) but i only got 10 large, i've got time however to start up a colony, and don't plan on feeding any off for atleast 6 months.
they're slow moving, don't fly, and don't climb, but take 3-5 months to reach breeding size which is a major down point.
look at a few, and determine which speed, climbing, flying points interest you or deter you from wanting them in your house.
