mixing geckos

wisp Oct 31, 2005 04:35 PM

hello.
i am wondering if there is another gecko that would mix well with a leopard gecko.
i know crested & gargoyal geckos are more tropical, are there any others i can reasearch that have a dessert-ish habitat? a good friend of mine has a leopard gecko, and i have heard of people mixing pink tounged geckos and crested is why i ask.
thanks for any help.

Generally speaking its a bad idea to mix any species together. Of course there are the differences in care to consider, but also all animals carry certain pathogens in their system, what may be a harmless pathogen to one animal could be deadly to another. Mixing species means you are mixing pathogens, and it could make one of the animals ill.

There are many other reasons why its not a good idea....im sure other people will jump in

Hmmm this is a though one. I personal don’t agree with mixing species. To me its like you are creating a new species of lizard and even the most responsible keepers have lost there pets from time to time “You get where I am going with this” While personally I think in my state of California any thing related to or bred from a Leo would quickly fall ill and die here I don’t know where you are from and an escapee could possibly thrive in the habitat where you are from. I am sure there will be those that agree as well as disagree with me but It just my opinion that mixing species is not the best.

I believe he meant 'mixing' as in keeping in the same enclosure not as in mixing them genetically. The pathogen example given is the main reason (besides differing husbandry needs) I have seen people be opposed to mixing species. However, I have read articles of different species being kept together. Assumably there are other lizards native to the areas from which leos come which would have similar needs. What these are I have no idea. So I guess I am saying that yes, it is possible to mix species assuming they have the same care requirements. It just isn't always a good idea. Just because you can do something does not mean you should.

Gocha, sorry my fault I misunderstood. I do from time to time mix species in an enclosure but its rare. I have only had one ill afect involving a S Alligator Lizard and a Western Skink. We wont get into detail but I can say I still have the Alligator lizard "I'm sure you get it" I have had great success keeping Tree frogs in with my Western Fence lizards so long as the enclosure is big enough to be able to recreat both habitats. I cant see a problem with it real. Like was already said if they both come from the same type of enviroment and they leave eachother alone "No fighting" then there should not be a big deal. However I know others the will fearsly object to keeping 2 species in the same enclosure.

yeah, that is what i ment. sorry i wasn't clear enough.
i can find lots on crested geckos mixing with skinks and gargoyal geckos. looks like no one's done much testing out other sepcies with leopard's.
...guess i'll be reading all about it the hard way...
