WLTX (Columbia, S Carolina) 31 October 05 Goose on Patrol
Cameron, Louisiana: This goose won't get cooked. Odie, a Greylag goose found in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, knows how to survive.
He was rescued by the soldiers of Task Force Alabama near Cameron Parish Courthouse in Louisiana.
"When we found him, Odie was up to his neck in mud," commented Command Sgt. Major Jerrold Denson of Task Force Alabama. The soldiers befriended Odie and rescued him from his muddy prison. To the members of Task Force Alabama, Odie has become somewhat of a mascot. Odie will usually wait until late in the day and go across the street from the remains of the hotel, where Task Force Alabama is based.
Around 10:00 each evening, alligators will migrate towards the marshy areas near the road. Once Odie heads back towards the TF Alabama camp, alligators start following him. It’s very dangerous for Odie to chance fate by getting so close to the alligators, but Odie either isn't aware of the danger he's in, or he just doesn't care.
Or is it all a setup? As Odie leads them across the street, passing trucks occasionally hit the alligators. So far, Odie is responsible for the deaths of three alligators. Is this just dumb luck or a cleverly executed plan by a goose on a mission? Whatever the case, Task Force Alabama can rest easy at night knowing Odie is on patrol –with the score Odie- 3, Alligators-0.
