wonderful pictures!!
When how old are those hatchlings? Do you keep the two kinds separate?

What do you plan on doing with the young? Are you running a release program?

They are just adorable

Cable_Hogue Nov 01, 2005 06:53 PM

Glad you liked the pics. I do keep them together for now. As they grow older the solare will out compete the cornutum for food so I will seperate them.
It is illegal to release them to the wild. It's a shame but understandable, as a disease could decimate wild populations.
I have give most of them away now.

OOhh i see, i understand that now.

So the people you give them away to know about the ants they need? I guess you are in an area where it is easy to collect the ants too?

I was curious about breeding maybe one year to supply some people interested in canada but i was always worried about people not being able to meet the lizards ant demand.

I was still unsure if our large black ants would work.. but now its a bit too cold to collect any.

I usually attend a large reptile show in our city and i always see 4-5 Hl's for sale... Noone really knows what they are, but they seem to be picking up in popularity. And of course, when i got mine i was told "small crix would be fine" So i dunno.. :/

I am very happy to see your breeding success... hope to see more in the future as well! ^^

Here's my contribution Cable. If you can't cut and paste from this post, let me know and I'll email these pics to you.

Here is some of my platyrhinos hatchlings along with a couple of the solare I recieved from Cable this year, just hanging out on a rock near the basking bulb.
Notice the young solare coming at the camera trying to steal all the attention of the camera in the first photo.

Two species side by side.

I think I can, I think I can!!

Ahh! That's more like it.

What a face!!

This photo was taken right after this little solare woke up.
These guys have the coolest personalities!

I've tried hundreds of times to get a picture of an HL lashing it's tounge out to snatch an ant to no avail. They attack so quick. Here's the best I could do, just pulled an ant back into it's mouth.

I'll be posting pics throughout winter of their growth. Hope you enjoy these.

Thanks Ryan, I can get these pics from the web here. Nice shots. What kind of lighting are you using? And camera?

Thanks Cable. No special lighting. Just turned the camera flash off and used the natural light from the 100 watt basking bulb. The shutter speed automatically changes to "slow" to capture the light better. My camera is a 3 year old Olympus D-550. Pretty ancient compared to the standards of most but I have taken some pretty good pics with it. I would like one of those dandy $500 cameras that practically take the picture for you, but hey, if it's not broke, why fix it?
Thanks again!

Those are some great pictures!! I wasnt sure of thier size till i saw the cricket comparison. Too cute.

What kind of sand do you have them on?

Ryan-reptilian Nov 04, 2005 02:07 AM

Thanks Ciddian. I have them on regular old childrens play sand from Home Depot. In the past I tried the finer "designer" sand you can buy at the pet stores, but that seemes to always get stuck in their nostrils. Not to mention that stuff dusted up my house so much that it seemed like I was dusting 3 times a day.
Thanks again!

I am a school teacher in Fort Smith, Arkansas on the border of Oklahoma, I want to adopt or purchase a horned lizard. Can someone direct me the right way? Thank you, Keith
Would pay for shipping and extra for your time!

I'm in Edmonton, and well, there is a mix-up with "demand" and saleability. Few (well, none that I know of) people here actually search out horned lizards, while they aren't hard to sell at a pet store to unsuspecting novices. If in Canada, have you had a hard time ording ants across the border?

Ian

ps, I'm guessing you're from TO, let's see who gets further in May, the Leafs or the Oilers

ciddian Nov 08, 2005 05:24 AM

Hehehe... we will see what happens in may for sure! My mum is a hard core leafs fan.. lol she wears the jearsys to work on game day.. lol
I myself havent seen any in the petshops... but the PCPC reptile show usually has a handful. Port credit always seems to have them and maybe one or two others.
I personally dont have too much trouble getting the ants from across the border. but i find they are almost on thier way out by the time they get to me.
