outdoor enclosure in rural areas

drtom Nov 01, 2005 11:21 AM

I previously had an outdoor enclosure for the summer when I lived on Long Island which had foot high walls. Did fine for 20 years without any problems. I am now living in rural area of Connecticut and was concerned if I need to worry about wildlife bothering the torts. They would still be small in the Spring and I would probably bring them in each night but should I be concerned about racoons, possum, etc bothering them? Anyone have any expierence with this. I see some enclosures in the forum with large fences around them.

Racoons, possoms, skunks, rats, mice they will all bother tortoises. The best way to keep them out is to make a top for the enclosure and to bury something under ground to prevent anything from digging in.

Thanks. I did some more looking around and I have seen that most enclosures for small torts do have a top on like you suggest. I was just thinking of making something bigger but I guess that could wait until they are bigger and less vulnerable.
