People just do not realize that it's not set in stone that ALL male box turtles must have red eyes.
Yesterday when I picked up Chip there was a different person working the front desk, not the same one that had been there when I dropped him off.
She asked why I was there & I said I'm here to pick up Chip, I could tell she didn't know who I meant. I said the turtle.. oh yeah she knew about him. When I said turtle I saw the ears of the other people in the waiting room perk up.
She brings him out but the vet was out of the office & the techs in the back hadn't filled his prescription yet so I had to wait. I got him out of his carrier to look at him & this woman who said she has box turtles too started talking to me. I don't remember what I said but after talking a while she asked me how I know he's male because his eyes are not red.
She has turtles but doesn't know that not all males have red eyes? I said look at that tail.. look at those thick heavy back legs. Before he was repaired he had a very concave plastron but now with the acrylic you can't see that he does. Who knows after all is said & done he may not have a concave plastron again.
Red eyes/brown eyes/amber eyes.. that always seems to throw people off, I explained to her it's a myth that all males have red eyes.. I wish that myth would go away!
