Mealworms?

jasonw Nov 01, 2005 11:42 AM

I started trying my hand at breeding mealworms for some of my herps about a week ago. I folowed all the instructions on the manny websites I read about it and so far about 70% of the worms I started with have turned black and died. Did I just get a bad batch? Any advice. I put them in a container wich was filled with the same stuff they coime in from the store. I put the container on a shelf in my herp room and it stayed at about 70-80F at all times. HMMMMMMMMM Worth another try? Give up and just keep buying them?????

thats probably because the stuff they are in from the petstore is usually bedding not food. you want to take them out and put them in oatmeal and put a slice of potato on the top. i use butter container things (like the country crock ones)they put the lid back on and let them alone. after a little while they will turn into little caccoon things and you want to seperate them, they dont need food but i always put a little oatmeal in anyway. soon those thiings will turn into beetles and they will need food and potatos(for water) or you can use that gut load water stuff. make sure they have oatmeal to eat and lay eggs in. soon you will have little(and i mean little) meallies. it is important to keep the beetles and cocoon things seperated from the mealies tho because they will get eaten at. good luck. btw, the oatmeal has to be dry.

actually it would be better if its not flavored so there's no sugar, but i dont kno if it matters. all i kno is i can go to the dollar store and get a big thing of plain oatmeal for a dollar. and the flavored stuff is a lot more than that.
