New to the forum

Hey all. I've been watching and purchasing from the classifieds for a couple of years now, but just recently dicovered the forums! I'm pretty new to the herp world and this will be my first year trying to breed (um.... I mean trying to get my snakes to breed!). I've read the practice and theory on the Rio Bravo Reptiles' website and that was informative, but I still get a little confused when I read about the different prctices of some of the breeders. Right now my male poss super ghost is all over anything he can find. My females seem dissinterested though. He's locked both of them up in the past, so I am hoping that it means that they might already be gravid. In fact my Anery will literally try and knock him off when he starts courting her, so I sotpped putting them together. Out of couriosity, is it common practice or effective to using compulation to get your females' cycle going?

Well, I just wanted to say hi. I'll post some pics when I figure out how.

Scott

Hope you find good info here. In my experience with breeding - If the male is still courting, then she isn't gravid yet. The males will stop a bit before the female ovulates. Then she'll go into a deep shed cycle. I always leave my males with the females thru the shed cycle to see if there's anymore interest, and there never is. When you say "locked-up", did you see actual penetration or just their tails all entwined? I've had courtship go for 3 months with one pair, even a month after I saw penetration. The females WILL act like they are being bothered and act like they want to get away during courtship. The male is digging his spurs under her scales and irritating her constantly. I'd leave them together, and read others breeding info. Their are other opinions for breeding boas, but the boas will breed for the most amatuer snake owner, and yet resist breeding for the life-long pro.

Thanks for the info. I have seen penetration as well as their tails just being wrapped up. I haven't seen the females really blow up "like they've swallowed a football" though. I've been talking with my friends about them (who don't know anything about herps) and they always say "how typical" that the male is interested but the females isn't. In one of the other "snake" forums I was told that if I had seen penetration to seperate them imediately, and not to re-intorduce, so I don't want to do anything that would jeopardize the pregnancy.

On a side note, I was cleaning one of the smaller males cage and had hime with my other adolecent male. One of the males seemed to be courting the other male. Is this establishing dominance like in canines? I seperating them just incase one of them was a female, but was wondering about the behavoir.

while and see if he loses interest. Watch for the shed referred to above and if you have a heat gun you can see in the later stages if she is maintaining 86-88 degrees. That is a good indicator she is gravid. Good luck!
