The constant battle of heating.

Turtlequest Nov 01, 2005 05:32 PM

Living in NJ where the weather this time of year can vary quite dramatically is a hard chore to keep up with. After trying many different Light/Heating pad combo's, this is the current temp for my Western Hog's tank.

Temp gun results:
Cool side 75
Hot side 91
Inside his hiding area 96.5 - 97. (i guess the heat accumulates inside of the ceramic hiding stone)

Are these temps ok? I hear so many different answers I'm not sure what to believe.

The snake seems to like the 75 coolside during the day, and either the hot side or inside the box at night.

If you read my literature review on hognose thermal preferences, you'll see that I agree completely with your temperatures. I think that is exactly where it needs to be, although you should keep an eye on that heat accumulation in the ceramic stone.

I am providing the link for my previous post. I just got information by Lillywhite on hognose thermal preferences and activity patterns, and I'm currently waiting on a master's thesis from Canada on thermal preferences. When I have time, I will amend the document, but I suspect their numbers will coincide with my previous conclusions.

I will ask you a favor by helping me reply to some of the posts on this forum about hognose temperatures. I think you have the right temperatures, and you should post with your observations on your success/failure's with those temperatures.
