Origin of amelanistic nelsons milks

dniles Nov 01, 2005 08:12 PM

Does anyone know when and where these were first hatched?

I read a thread below a while back that said they originated in some zoo in Texas. I was told (from what I believed to be a credible source) that these were first hatched by a guy in South Carolina. I think his name was Doug Moody.

Anyone know where these started? I doesn't really matter, I guess, I was just curious.

I've been working with Nelson's for a long time and most people I've talked to credit Moody with being the originator. There have been other people who have produced them shortly thereafter by breeding togather two supposedly "normal" Nelson's milks.

Yes that is true. The first albino was hatched out by Doug Moody in the late 90s from what i recall.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

Didn't Brent Puegnut (sp?) also hatch some albino nelsons around the same time as Moody? Or maybe it was just after? Its been a few years and I can't remember. Ken

I'm not sure about that, it may be true. I did actually get the opportunity to visit Doug Moody back in the late 90's and handpicked some nelsons from his stock. He is a great guy and had an unbelievable collection at the time.

Doug told me he was the first to hatch them out and I believe him. When I read the post below that said they came from a zoo in Texas, it confused me since Doug told me he was the originator.

I saw the original albinos when they were yearlings at Doug Moodys. I believe Doug had a pair of young adult Nelsoni that hatched out normal appearing babies. It was a small clutch and he sold I believe all those babies. Why wouldn't he, no one knew what would happen the next year. The next year the original adults threw 2 albinos showing they were het for albino. The first breeding babies that were sold were 66% het for albino and that is why some other breeder/breeders got into albino Nelsoni early. He just got lucky and got hets without knowing it. I believe it was Don Wilson of Seven Generations Reptiles. Anyway, Doug was ahead of the game because he had the original adults that were now known hets and he had albino babies as well. This is what I remember Doug told me then.
