I heard it is illeagel to buy/sell any venomous snakes in NJ. Does that mean it's illeagel to keep one? I mean like if I catch a copperhead, would it be o.k. for me to keep it? Thanks in advance.

Yes, unless you have a venomous permit (which is VERY difficult to obtain) you may not keep venomour reptiles. It is also illegal to take ANY reptile from the wild, venomous or not.
Are you sure it's illeagel to take any reptile from the wild? I read in a recent NJ wildlife book you could take some reptiles, but there is a limit to the amount you can take like they said a limit of 15 bullfrogs and a limit of 2 snapping turtles. I once caught a painted turtle right infront of a ranger and he didn't say anything. I'm confused about all the NJ laws, some people say you can't, but others say you can.
Welcome to the joys of NJ herp laws. They are very confusing, and you get different responses depending on who you talk to a FG&W.
I go by the official written herp laws which state:
Please keep in mind that the collection of any nongame species from the wild is illegal. This includes all nongame amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

You, can take Bull frogs and Snapping Turtles from the wild "IF" you have a current NJ fishing license. I think the limit is 2 or 4 but I'm not positive. And, it is totally illegal to take any other herp from the wild. Big BIG fines if your caught.
I just came back from a lake with my dad and I saw the ranger and asked him where I can find snakes. He helped me out and I caught a garter. He never said anything about not taking them out from the wild. I guess different parts of NJ have slightly diferent laws. BTW, has any one ever went to the pinebarrens. Reptiles magazine had a great article about herping there.
No, the same laws about wildlife apply to ALL of NJ, it's just that some people/rangers are more knowlegeable about them than others. In any part of NJ it is illegal to take reptiles from the wild. (and generally not a good idea anyway as wild caught animals are more likely to harbor parasites, will be incredibly stressed by captivity, and you may be harming the breeding pool of those animals).
