rough scales after shed

richiewrt Jul 22, 2003 12:10 AM

I just bought my first snake, and it is a cal king. After its first shed since i got her, her belly scales are very rough and look like they are wrinkled. Am i doing something wrong? Is this normal after they shed? I have been keeping the temp at arround the hight 80s to low 90s on the hot side of the cage, and the humidity has been staying arround 50. Before she shed, all her scales were smooth. I have no problems getting her to eat and she is very docile when being handled and shows no sight of them being senesitive. I am using aspen as a substrait. Any help or information would be good.

I'm not sure but it sounds like she may be getting dehydrated. Try soaking her is a few inches of water for about an hour. Make sure the water isn't too hot. What feels luke warm to your hand is probably around 100F. Also, you might want to drop your cage temps 5-10 degrees and definitley don't leave up in the ninetys at night. It's only my opinion but snakes need a break at night. Especially if you intend to breed them.

Then again, if she shed fine (all in one piece) it's probably not dehydration and in that case, I'm clueless.
