Bairds question.....

phiber_optikx Nov 01, 2005 09:58 PM

Can you "guarantee" the color on bairds? I know there is no way to 100% guarantee a color. But I guess what I mean is, if the parents are an INTENSE chrome color, will the babies be this color? is there a "dull" texas phase? thanks alot! I want a bairds but am looking for that special one...

Phiber, genetics can be tricky.
Color saturation comes from many different alleles.
Your best bet is, of course, to find a pair of adults that are what you want, but there's really no telling how the young will mature.
I have a clutch of babies now that seem like they will be very colorful, but I also have one from last year that looked like it would develop a lot of red, too, but is instead turning a bright metallic silver.
It takes years to see the results in bairdi, so one has no idea what will happen by seeing the young.

They tend to breed true, so if you like the adults, you should like the babies when they grow up. The problem with bairdi is that they are variable and different people like different things in the pattern.
- some people like the silvery "chrome" finish seen in the Val Verde county snakes
- some people like the blue heads of the Mexican snakes
- some people like the gun metal gray with bright red/orange coloration on the edges of the scales (northeastern parts of the range)
- some people like the Davis mountain snakes

You should look at as many photos as you can and decide what you like. Remember that bairds are much more beautiful in person than any photo can show.

Of course, there is variation within localities and by age. Here is my pair from the northeastern part of the range.

Chris what do you do for a living. I have seen quite a few post you have made and I like everything you say and how you say it even when I don't agree. Are you a formal biologist, just well read or what?? Do you have a web site?? Anyway I just have a lot of respect for how you represent yourself on here.

Thanks Jason

>>Chris what do you do for a living?

I am a biology professor at a Community College, so I teach biology classes.

To be honest, I am probably just really opinionated

Don't confuse frequency of posting with having anything useful to add to a conversation - LOL.

Cool thought you must have some formal background. You seem to know what you are talking about most of the time. LOL

No way.LOL.Ive never seen 2 exactly alike. Some may have the same traits.Bairdi seem to show there true color between 4 to 6 years of age.The difference between 3 and 4 is mind blowing. At least on mine it has been.Mine have alot of yellows and orange in them and I couldnt tell you were the original stock came from.

I don't want them to be exactly alike I just want to make sure I get a nice "silver" one instead of the orange mexican type.
