They are not extremely difficult to have. Do thorough research so that you have the proper setup, temps and humidity for them. I would recommend an easier snake to start with if you've never owned a snake before. Cornsnake or king, something that has a low level of husbandry involved and is tolerant of mistakes. If you really want to start with a GTP, you would be better off buying and older animal that is well established and healthy, rather than a neonate that can be difficult. The most difficult part is getting babies to eat once they've hatched. It's what makes chondros so difficult.

just to add on to what Meg has said......
the reason these snake are not usually a good beginner snake is because most new people to the hobby do not have the passion yet (or the addiction)...
these snake are not cheap... and it is always a good idea to get a CB to start out with... CB are less prone to lots of problems like internal parasites, mites, ect. and a CB from some breeders is not that much more expensive... in fact it might be a good idea to attend the other Chondro forums and visit the chat and ask who has some...
the husbandry for these snakes is also not real cheap... even if your build your own cage it can cost a nice amount... and most people that are just starting out dont like to just put their beautiful new snake in a tub, they like to show it's beauty off... they require proper heating and humidity as well and coming into the hobby that can be a little tricky to understand...
well with all that in mind that is pretty much why they are not really a good beginner snake... However, if you would really like to get one i would reccomend attending the other Chondro forums and learning from the posts of others and through the chat and while your doing that you can get yourself a proper set up and experiment with it and make sure you can provide your snake with the proper requirements before you get it... their is alot less stress if you have the cage cuz then once you get the snake you just put it in and your done... no worries (as long as you did everything correct)...
good luck
