For a GTP does the temp need to be consistant at 82 degrees for the entire tank or does there need to be a gradient with a top and bottom temp? If so, what are the high temps and the low temps? Does there need to be drops in temps for night time as opposed to day time temp? Thanks

There should definetly be a gradient. High's of 84-86 and low's no less than 78 or so would be ideal in my opinion.

A gradient is definetly in order...something in the range of 80 on the cool side to 85 on the hot side during the day and 75-80 at night. ( or - a few degrees)
Many GTP tend to stay on the highest perch and therefore do not use a vertical gradient well. They seem to utilize an horizontal gradient much better (achieved usually by heating only 1/3 to 1/2 of the roof surface area)

I think both suggestions, from orthopode especially, hit the nail on the head. just keep a gradient, but not too hot. the highest temps in any of my chdro cages are about 86 or so.
