Black Tail breeding help......

bthacker Nov 02, 2005 10:04 AM

I placed my female in with my male after shedding and he seems somewhat intrigued by her. She doesn't want to have anything to do with him. I think she is uncomfortable in her surroundings and a big male chasing her. Do I leave them in there together? I don't want him to eat her but I need to go to work. How many breeders leave them in the cage together unattended?.....Thanks in advance.

I've never bred melanurus but with unicolor, Texas, and Easterns I've leave pairs together for a few days at a time during mating season. I reason that in the wild a pair would probably do the same. During the season males eat little to nothing and females eat less than at other times of the year. Good luck.

Thank you.....Have you had any attempt to eat one another?

Dan F. keeps his Drys together year round. He turned me onto keeping pairs together and I've been doing it for the last few years with no casualties. Just make sure they are about the same size and feed them well.

You might try getting ahold of Chris Raden through the link at indigosnakes.com. One of my BTs came from him a year ago (a thoroughly wonderful animal), and he seems to be pretty on top of the BT situation. Good luck.
